Connecting Parua: A Bridge Makes All the Difference

We are overjoyed to announce the official opening of the Parua Community Bridge—a beautiful structure nestled in one of Kenya’s most remote and breathtaking landscapes. This bridge is more than just steel and cables; it is a symbol of hope, connection, and transformation for the people of Parua in West Pokot.

Ripley’s Crossing - Parua, West Pokot

A Bridge Tailored for the Land—and the People

The Parua Bridge is a special one for us. It’s our first-ever hybrid bridge, a design we adapted from our partners at Bridges to Prosperity. It was customized to fit the unique topography of the area—one side steep and mountainous, the other relatively flat. With this terrain in mind, our engineers crafted a structure that reflects both innovation and the resilient spirit of the people it serves.

Driving from Kitale, the road meanders through hills and valleys, offering stunning views of mountains and lush greenery. The final stretch to Parua, a steep climb from Sebit, tested even our four-wheel drives. But every bump in the road was worth it when we arrived at the site and felt the community's warmth.

A Community Transformed

This bridge now stands as a lifeline for school children, farmers, families, and healthcare workers. The region’s only market is over 20 kilometers away, and their nearby shopping center struggles to provide basic necessities. Until now, crossing the Parua River—especially during the rainy season—meant risking lives on unstable makeshift bridges or waiting days for waters to subside.

But today, that has changed.

A Day of Joy and Gratitude

We were welcomed with open arms by the students and staff of the Parua School, whose songs and smiles moved us deeply. Trees were planted to commemorate the day, heartfelt words of appreciation were exchanged, and the community even prepared lunch for us—a gesture of hospitality and unity we will never forget.

Among the crowd stood Samson Rotich, the man whose voice first echoed the need for this bridge two years ago. A dedicated healthcare worker, Samson formally applied for the bridge and stood with us on opening day, beaming with pride. His gratitude echoed the voices of an entire community that now feels seen, heard, and connected.

Even the local chief expressed his thanks, noting how this structure will serve generations to come.

Inspiring the Next Generation

We were inspired by the students—bold, bright-eyed, and ambitious. Some spoke of dreams to become engineers, doctors, and leaders. We hope that with the safety and accessibility this bridge brings, these children will get the uninterrupted education they deserve and the chance to chase their dreams.

More Than a Bridge

The Parua Bridge is more than a crossing—it’s a connection to education, healthcare, markets, and opportunity. It’s a celebration of what can happen when communities, visionaries, and supporters come together to create lasting change.

We are grateful to everyone who made this possible. This is just one bridge—but its impact will ripple far and wide.

Here’s to many more bridges, and many more lives transformed.
